The sword may have been a sort of actuator though...a reflection of her true inner strength and virtue.

Death is a very serious game we play with the darkness.

Every atom in your body is replaced after 7 years (or something like that), yet you still experience the sense of continuity of 'I am' even though the hardware in this life has changed.

The sense of 'I am' arises from the signal, not the machine. It is a robust and persistent enough sense to maintain a continuum of perception even after completely changing the hardware a dozen or so times in one lifespan, so why should that sense of identity necessarily be extinguished at death?

In Buddhism it is said that the only thing that reincarnates is your bad habits.
