Come to think of it, we don’t have a physical theory of gravity, which would necessarily be a quantum theory.
What about General Relativity?
GR is, basically, a phenomenological theory, with a mathematical infrastructure. It does not explain how it is that mass is actually able to curve space-time. We are left with the unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics.
As with the Sun, we can simply include gravity as an essential ingredient in our global ecosystem. Its celestial manifestation is how we manage to save the celestial phenomena.
Why couldn’t we have used Ptolemaic epicycles instead? Well, when we include dark energy and dark matter, etc, we are resorting to a postmodern rendition of epicycles.
