It teaches that God wants our love and praise, and is willing to die for it.

Well, ok, the Stoics do not explicitly embrace personhood.  But I believe that Marcus did.  

For Marcus, the Logos is incarnate in each of us.  

What then was the point of Jesus?  

Jesus grounded the Logos within the Metanarrative of History.

This may be precisely where science meets its Waterloo...... Gödel’s Theorem...... particularly as taken up by Penrose.  

You might think that, nearly a century after Gödel’s expose, that Strong AI would have given up the ghost, and science along with it.  

There are cosmic consequences of Gödel’s Theorem.  It is too important to be left to mathematicians.  

Indeed, there are eschatological consequences.  

It appears that the world was waiting for an eschatologist to spell out those consequences.  Okey-dokey, sports fans.........

Science might have ended in 1900, with Plank’s discovery of the Quantum.

Or in 1950 with Quine’s deconstruction of Logical Empiricism.

I’ve been using the phrase ‘scientific materialism’.  In most instances, I should be speaking of ‘scientific reductionism’, which I take to be practically synonymous.  

The possible end of scientific reductionism leaves us with emergentism........ and, in particular with the problem of strong emergence.  

Biology might be the last holdout, still pretending to be purely analytical....... this recalcitrance is, I speculate, mainly political.  If it were to take emergence seriously, it would be opening itself up to vital forces and teleology, which forces it has been battling, for its entire existence.  

Scientific reductionism is surrounded on every side by intimations of holism and teleology.  This is the fortress of materialism, whose walls are about to implode....... in dramatic fashion.  

Be aware that there is a considerable, and possibly confusing, overlap between the philosophical notions of emergence and supervenience, qv.

These various discussions have a strong tendency to devolve into technical detail........ thus do they avoid the larger ontological/cosmological issues.

It could signal the end of scientific modernism.

Now, go back to the primordial soup 🥣, and think of a negentropic region that is able to sequester itself from the entropic soup.  Eventually it reproduces through a budding process.

I can see how Eric/goat might honestly believe that he is fighting the evil of the chick .  

In effect, Eric is saying...... let the good times roll...... ignore all the omens.... ignore the arc of history.  

chick comes on as the Cassandra, ushering in the dark forces of the Apocalypse.  

There is a sense in which I am urging on the Apocalypse, simply by proposing to be its witness.  

The prophetic tradition, from its inception, has foretold the end of the world.  In that regard, prophets are necessarily doomsayers.

If I’m a personalist, Eric is a presentist...... only the present has ever existed.  

Again, presentism speaks an undeniable truth...... every moment, every event is a microcosm.  

Again...... undeniable.  True, you cannot understand any event without understanding all of history....... but, by the same token, if you truly understand any event, you will necessarily understand all of history.  

If you truly understand yourself, the microcosm, you will understand the cosmos.  This is actually another statement of personalism.  You cannot be spiritually grounded without being a personalist.  

The best kept secret is that Eric the goat is a flaming personalist, but please don’t tell him...... he would be terribly confused.  

We could be complementary presences here, at OM, and, in fact we are, but it is not in Eric’s warrior guise to admit to such a thing, so we let him blast on through..... appreciating the historicity of such a juxtaposition...... as its own small step toward monism..... back to the Source.

Navel gazers, one and all, are personalists, mesmerized by their own microcosmic personas....... so is every Hindu and Buddhist..... every stoic and cynic.......  so is every, even slightly, thoughtful person...... think about it....... and, if you do think, you can’t help but get personal!

The behaviorists are supposed to be the most objectively impersonal amongst scientists ‍....., my parents were best friends with Fred&Eve Skinner, for Heaven’s sake...... yes, chick almost made it into his own little Skinner box !  

Was Fred not thoughtful.... personal?  

He was certainly introspective, as you might see from reading his novel, Walden Two....... where, ultimately, he was an anarchist, rather like our very own Eric the Goat .  

Perhaps Karl Marx comes closest to being an impersonalist, with his dialectical materialism.  But, clearly and ironically, he was a hinge person in history...... no less so than the jguy, in many eyes.  

Yes, Eric is the true anarchist, rejecting all authority, save his own self.  That is an absolute (sic) form of personalism, which, otherwise, is totally relational.  

Eric is on his own cloud .  He doesn’t want any competition, particularly not from a j2.

One might wonder how a person can come to know that the cosmos is impersonal.  I mean...... really!  

Is this species of knowledge personal or impersonal?  

And what sense can be made of impersonal knowledge?  

I think of Polanyi’s tacit knowledge or tacit dimension.  

It could easily be argued that 99% of our knowledge is tacit.  

Words are like ice cubes 🧊 floating on an ocean of cosmic consciousness.  

One could say the same for our poor little egos.  

It may be this latter point that the impersonalists....... mystics, etc..... are trying to get at.  

Have we not all experienced that oceanic feeling?  

Is not the cosmic Self just the event horizon of something bottomless..... abyssal?  That is my point when I say that it’s not space & time that are infinite....... rather, it is the qualitative or tacit dimension that is infinite...... is abyssal.  

Jung came close to this view with his understanding of the collective unconscious.  Ironically, it was Freud who came up with the term ‘oceanic’.  

It is the abyss of the collective unconscious over which pantheists have attempted obtain an hegemony.  

Can the chick wrestle the ocean back....... from the goat ?

Here we get a clear view of the difference between the chicken and the goat .......

The goat sees me as advocating only vicarious or substitutionary atonement.  

That is a valid criticism of much of xianity.  xianity is seen a the poor man’s path to salvation....... a crutch for the lame.    

Certainly, the concept of Hell does nothing to facilitate a feeling of Oneness.

Atonement is generally seen as the forgiving of sins.  This is where the goat gets his hackles up.  I can readily sympathize.  Even Protestants have difficulty with the confession booth.  

However, we have no problem understanding that we’d better be careful what we’re wishing for when we go the well...... one had better have a clear mind.  

However, the notion of karma might even be worse....... there is no forgiveness.  

Jesus sure did cut through a lot of karma crap....... a hot knife through warm butter.  

In the pantheist traditions, atonement is a strictly solitary process.  

In the polytheist traditions, you have a potential infinity of gods to placate....... a daunting prospect.
