hobbit,
Carl Sagan is not a truth seeker. He is a scientist engaged in normal science.
You don’t go looking for truth or paradigm shifts in telescopes.
I labor under the impression that our current paradigm, scientific materialism, is fundamentally flawed.
One does not go out in the streets, looking for new paradigms, not at first.
Where I go is to the junkyard....... of modernism. Modernism has come up short, in explaining the world. Many, who share my misgivings, engage in fringe science...... trying to push the boundaries of science, beyond what is currently, academically accepted boundaries.
On this thread, hobbit, I am doing none of those things.
..............
Hold on....... I misspoke. Galileo discovered the moons of Jupiter, looking through the telescope he had built. He, politically, helped foment the Copernican revolution.
Bigger telescopes don’t make for bigger revolutions..... is my point. Once the geocentric model had been overthrown, anthropocentricity could not be far behind, and with it the entire prophetic tradition.
What was left standing was the Eastern tradition. That tradition has become the spiritual home of all but the fundamentalists, including for you and smelly. Deep ecology may be viewed as one aspect of the mystical tradition.
Mystics nibble around the edges of science, looking for the soft spots.
I’m not a nibbler, hobbit.
Rather, I beg, borrow and steal from all the paradigms that Science rejected. And I repurpose science, itself, as a major source of new metaphors. Out of these ‘found objects’, I cobble together a........ patchwork?
I don’t think so.
1:30............
For the first five years of my sojourn into metaphysics, I struggled with Cartesian mind/body dualism. That dualism was born out of a desperate attempt to save a remnant of the spiritual realm from the onslaught of science.
It didn’t work, although fundamentalists still subscribe to it.
Where was I to turn?
It never occurred to me to surrender to mysticism. The scientific/rationalist impulse was imbedded at my core. The spirit of Truth....... I took it to heart.
This is what smelly failed to grasp, for the longest time. A few days ago he may have caught a glimpse of this........ Truth that you can take to heart. It can be a slippery notion, if you don’t take it to heart.
How can we ever learn to trust Truth again?
If Truth there be, has it not been distorted..... beyond all recognition..... first by Religion, and then by Science?
(cont.......)
